(Not) My Church
They won’t let us sing or dance.
They say it’s a sin to play cards with friends.
Even in the summer we must wear long pants
with no bellbottoms at the ends.
They say we must wear mostly black
and rarely white, and sometimes gray or brown.
They say we must follow the rules or we’ll get a smack
and be the talk of the town.
They say we can’t read storybooks
or write any fiction.
They say we can’t care about our looks
because within the church that’ll cause social friction.
They say we can’t have parties for Halloween
or celebrate the holidays.
I think they’re being very mean
in a lot of ways.
Our lives are more awful with these rules
than they are without.
They won’t teach evolution in their schools.
It makes me want to scream and shout.
