77. Poverty in the Country
I’ve got no shoes to walk to school.
I’ve got no lunch to pack.
I’ve got no food for home and I’m an unemployed fool
and if I complain I get a smack.
I’ve got no job to speak of.
I’ve got a lot of time.
All we’ve got is iffy love
that can turn on a dime.
I’ve got no education.
My parents couldn’t afford it.
My idea of a vacation
is to find food in the trash and hoard it.
I really love the farm where we are
but summer hasn’t been fruitful since before I was born
and last fall we had to travel far
in our field to get a single ear of corn.
