The Teacher
My students never pay attention.
All they do is talk in class while I teach.
I have to give them detention
but my goal seems out of reach.
I can’t seem to get them to sit
and concentrate on my coursework.
I often end up having to split
up students who talk in class and shirk.
I don’t like it when they backtalk
me because I feel like a fool.
I hate even more than when they balk
at having to even come to school.
I confiscate everyone’s phone and iPod.
I give detentions during lunch.
I know you think I’m playing God
by doing so, but I have a hunch
that if they weren’t so damn distracted
they’d actually participate.
I think the last time that they acted
like they really appreciate
my class. I teach economics now.
It is an important subject.
It’s not like I don’t tell them how
to do the work. I don’t expect them to be perfect.
I’m really hands-on. Honestly.
They just don’t like to listen at all.
I wish they’d just listen to me.
I wish they’d just be on the ball.
