Sewerdome
Hurricane Katrina has claimed our home.
So we have to go to the Superdome.
There’s shit all over the floor in here.
People die and no one sheds a tear.
People have sex inside
and the freezer is full of people who have died.
People steal each other’s belongings.
I already have homesick longings.
People shoot at each other’s heads.
We’d still be afraid to sleep even if we had beds.
A girl’s throat was slit. She was no more than thirteen.
I cannot unsee the things I’ve seen.
An international group arms themselves with knives,
making a circle around their luggage and their wives.
People try to steal stuff
and think that they survive they have to act rough.
